When our security engineers became aware of the issue Tuesday afternoon, we immediately began working on an update that closes the security hole. Security is a top priority for every Apple product, and regrettably we stumbled with this release of macOS. This was addressed with improved credential validation."
As for the cause, the notes say, "a logic error existed in the validation of credentials. Based on OIT testing, the page provides a useful guide for which software is recommended, near end of life, should be upgraded or is in an early-adoption phase.The notes in the security update say it specifically addresses the flaw. If you are a customer of OIT’s Dedicated Desktop Support service and would like help or have questions about upgrading your operating system, please submit a request through the Dedicated Desktop Support Service Request Portal. Software vendors have quickly followed suit and no longer support products on High Sierra which includes Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe CC 2021. Apple fixed the vulnerability in Big Sur 11.2.1, Catalina 10.15.7 and Mojave 10.14.6, but did not fix High Sierra and dropped support for that version. In early February, a severe security flaw was discovered in macOS. Not only that, but the campus recommended antivirus for Macs is no longer supported on High Sierra which means Macs that are running this older operating system are no longer protected from viruses and other malicious attacks. If you’re running macOS High Sierra 10.13 or earlier versions of macOS, you should upgrade to a newer version of macOS immediately as High Sierra and older versions are no longer supported by Apple.
